How much space is there between atoms?

If an atom is 99.9999999999999% empty, how does this compare with the space outside, between atoms. I know it must vary with the density of the matter in question, but it might be interesting to know this number for a few substance like, air, water, and stone. Also if you use mathematical notation, please explain what the symbols and letters mean.
